Rail Saw vs. Bridge Saw: Which Do Stone Fabricators Actually Need?

Every week, fabricators ask some version of the same question: "Do I actually need a bridge saw, or can a rail saw handle what we do?"

What Is a Bridge Saw?

A bridge saw is a fixed shop machine. The slab comes to the saw — loaded onto a worktable, positioned, and cut by a blade head that travels along a fixed bridge. 5. What are you cutting?

Both machines cut granite, marble, quartz, quartzite, and porcelain with the right blade. Where they diverge is in cut type and scale. A bridge saw handles straight cuts, miters, bevels, and grooves with the appropriate setup. A rail saw is optimized for straight rip cuts — ripping a slab to countertop width, cutting panels to cladding length, sizing material for installation.
