Description
Cutting redefined by ultrasonic technology. The Proxxon MICRO-Sonic Cutter MSC uses blades that vibrate at ultrasonic frequency — allowing them to slice through materials with minimal drag, no heat buildup, and no fraying or tearing on sensitive cut edges. Where a rotary tool or static blade would pull, compress, or melt the material, the MSC's ultrasonic action cuts cleanly and precisely through plastics, fiber composites (CFRP, GFRP), 3D printing materials (FDM filaments and resin prints), foils, cardboard, MDF, epoxy resin, leather, and much more.
How Ultrasonic Cutting Works
The MSC drives its blade at ultrasonic frequency — tens of thousands of vibrations per second. This rapid oscillation means the blade is effectively always cutting on the forward stroke, reducing the friction and drag of a static blade to near zero. The result:
- No heat buildup: Unlike rotary tools, the ultrasonic action doesn't generate frictional heat — critical for heat-sensitive materials like resin prints and thin foils
- No fraying: Clean, sealed cut edges on fibrous materials like CFRP, leather, and cardboard
- No compression: The blade slices rather than pushes, preserving the integrity of soft or layered materials
- High precision: Fine blade profiles follow tight curves and intricate cut lines accurately
Compatible Materials
- Fiber composites: CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic), GFRP (glass fiber reinforced plastic)
- 3D printing materials: FDM filament prints (PLA, ABS, PETG) and resin (SLA/MSLA) prints
- Plastics: Sheet plastic, plastic film, and formed plastic components
- Foils & films: Adhesive foils, vinyl, and thin sheet materials
- Cardboard & MDF: Precision cuts in board and sheet materials
- Epoxy resin: Cured resin castings and laminates
- Leather: Clean cuts without fraying or stretching
Accessory Selection Guide
The MSC accepts three types of accessories — choose based on your cutting task:
- Knives — 40-piece set (No. 27302): For slicing cuts in plastics, composites, foils, leather, and soft materials. The primary accessory for most MSC applications.
- Saw blades: For materials that require a sawing action — harder or thicker stock where a knife edge would deflect.
- Scrapers: For removing adhesive residue, labels, and surface coatings without damaging the substrate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this better than a rotary tool for cutting composites?
For many composite cutting tasks, yes — the ultrasonic action produces cleaner edges with less delamination and no heat-affected zone compared to a rotary cutting disc. For thick or hard composites requiring aggressive stock removal, a rotary tool may still be preferred.
Can it cut carbon fiber (CFRP)?
Yes — CFRP is one of the primary use cases for the MSC. The ultrasonic cutting action minimizes delamination and fraying at the cut edge, which is a common problem with rotary and static blade cutting of carbon fiber.
Are accessories included?
The MSC is sold as the tool only. Knives, saw blades, and scrapers are available separately — see the Works Well With section below.
