Description
Remove Etch Marks & Water Rings from Marble, Travertine & Limestone
Lustro Italiano Etch & Water Mark Remover Powder is a specialized polishing compound that restores the surface of marble, travertine, limestone, alabaster, and onyx after acid etching or water mark damage. Etch marks — the dull, light-colored spots left by acidic substances like lemon juice, vinegar, wine, or cleaning products — are a surface-level damage to the stone's polish. This powder works by mechanically re-polishing the affected area back to its original shine, by hand, without professional equipment.
Sold in 8 oz powder form. Not suitable for granite or quartz surfaces — etching does not occur on granite or engineered quartz.
Key Features & Benefits
Removes Etch Marks, Water Rings & Dull Spots
Targets the specific damage caused by acidic substances on polished and honed marble, travertine, limestone, and onyx — restores the surface to its original finish without professional grinding equipment.
Works by Hand — No Equipment Required
Apply with a rag and rub by hand for approximately 3 minutes per area. No machine, no special tools, no professional required for light to moderate etch damage.
Restores Both Polished & Honed Finishes
Effective on polished (glossy) and honed (matte/satin) marble and limestone surfaces. Restores the finish to match the surrounding undamaged stone.
For Soft, Acid-Sensitive Stones Only
Formulated specifically for marble, travertine, limestone, alabaster, and onyx — the stones that actually etch. Not for use on granite or quartz, which do not etch.
Compatible Surfaces
- Marble (polished and honed)
- Travertine
- Limestone
- Alabaster
- Onyx
Not suitable for: Granite, quartz (engineered stone), quartzite, or sintered stone.
How to Use
- Apply a spoonful of powder directly over the etch mark or water ring.
- Using a soft rag, rub the powder over the affected area by hand.
- Continue rubbing for approximately 3 minutes.
- If the etch is not fully removed, repeat steps 1–3 until the surface is restored.
- Clean the area and reseal with Lustro Italiano Stone Sealer — etching compromises the existing sealer and resealing is essential after treatment.
Frequently Asked Questions
What causes etch marks on marble?
Etch marks are caused by acidic substances — lemon juice, vinegar, wine, tomato, citrus, and many household cleaners — reacting with the calcium carbonate in marble, travertine, and limestone. The acid dissolves a thin layer of the stone's surface, leaving a dull spot. It's a chemical reaction, not a stain, which is why standard cleaners don't remove it.
Will this work on granite or quartz?
No. Granite and engineered quartz do not etch — they're acid-resistant. This product is formulated for soft, calcium-based stones that do etch: marble, travertine, limestone, alabaster, and onyx.
Do I need to reseal after using this product?
Yes. Etching compromises the sealer in the affected area. After restoring the surface with this powder, reseal with Lustro Italiano Stone Sealer to protect the restored area.
How deep can the etch damage be for this to work?
This product is effective on light to moderate etch marks — surface-level damage to the stone's polish. Deep etching or physical scratches that penetrate below the surface polish may require professional grinding and re-polishing.
Can I use it on honed marble as well as polished?
Yes. Effective on both polished (glossy) and honed (matte/satin) marble and limestone finishes.
Is quartzite affected by etching?
True quartzite is acid-resistant and does not etch. However, some stones sold as quartzite are actually marble or dolomitic marble and will etch. Learn more about quartzite vs marble identification.
